Before Science took over, we had to base product selection and offering on what society led us to beleive was popular. There was no room for the nuances of art and design as we see nowadays with our contemporary ranges. There was much more of a Product Plus approach to designing Birthday Gifts, which is evident in the Classic range on display here. We were seeking products that didnt offend, were popular and that so many people said they wanted, across all of the divisions; generational, gender, nationality, ethnicity etc.

We wanted our Birthday Hampers to be Different without being clichéd or undesirable, so product selection by our customers was analysed from Day 1. It was truly a case of trial and error over several quarters because remember that back in the early days, just because you launched a product, it didnt mean that it would rank. We would be different because we stood out as professional. The simplest and most unifying symbol of our position in the industry were our containers, the humble basket with its natural, sustainable characteristics stood head and shoulders above cheaper, paler imitators.
