Because Alicia Adelaide Needham understood something fundamental: different people need different songs. She wrote lullabies for children, love songs for couples, patriotic songs for soldiers, suffragette anthems for women fighting for the vote, hymns for churches, and hundreds of ballads for anyone who wanted to sing. It requires attention to who someone actually is rather than what category they fit. That's what Needham did with music.

Alicia Adelaide Needham was born in 1863 in Oldcastle, County Meath. Her father was an antiquarian known as the "Bard of Bailieborough." She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and graduated in 1887. She intended to be a concert pianist and performed widely across Britain and Ireland.

In 1892 she married Dr. Joseph Needham, a London physician. He changed the direction of her career by publishing her early songs at his own expense. She wrote in her autobiography: "When I married my own dear Doctor, he it was who set me on my composing career. He seized eight or nine of my songs and published them, much to my horror, for I dreaded letting my inmost thoughts be made public. However, when I saw my first Press notices, I took up heart."

She became extraordinarily prolific. Over the next thirty years, she composed more than 700 works—mostly songs and ballads, but also piano pieces, choral hymns, and marches for brass bands. Her most famous song was "An Irish Lullaby" (also known as "Husheen"), which became a standard. The legendary Irish tenor John McCormack recorded her work. Dame Clara Butt sang her songs. She won prizes at the Feis Ceoil for six consecutive years.

In 1906 she became the first woman president of the National Eisteddfod of Wales. She was a committed suffragette and composed "Four Songs for Women Suffragists" in 1908. During World War I, she served with the Red Cross as a searcher for the wounded and missing, and conducted the Band of the Irish Guards at the Royal Albert Hall. After the war, she was included on the Roll of Honour at St James's Palace.

She stopped composing around 1920 after her husband died. Her later years were difficult—financial troubles, declining health, a turn toward astrology and occultism. She died in London in 1945. Her son, also named Joseph Needham, became a distinguished scientist and historian, best known for his work Science and Civilisation in China.

Because she understood variety. She didn't compose one style of music and repeat it 700 times. She wrote for specific purposes: a lullaby for a tired child, a love song for a wedding, a patriotic anthem for soldiers, a hymn for Sunday service. Each composition addressed a real need for a real audience.

Needham composed 700 songs, but they weren't generic. Each addressed a specific purpose. That required attention, craft, and the willingness to write for diverse needs rather than one profitable formula.
