How Fun Earns Its Place in an Adult Birthday Gift
How Fun Earns Its Place in an Adult Birthday Gift
A little character, a little laughter, and still a gift with substance.
We find fun the easiest thing to get wrong in an adult birthday gift. Asked to carry the whole present, it tips into childish or tokenistic fast, and in our Fun range the thing being asked is almost always the soft toy. It gives these gifts their character and it is the part most likely to undo them. So every cuddly toy earns its place against one question. Does it read as a character the sender chose for this person, or as the gift relying on something childish to do too much of the work.
That question is easy to ask and easy to fail. A soft toy is, on the face of it, the most childish thing we could put in front of an adult, and it is also the item buyers remember and the one this whole range is built around. Our Fun page is happy to tell you these gifts suit adults of any age. What it does not spell out, and what actually decides the matter, is how the least grown-up item in the gift keeps from pulling everything around it down to its own level.
What we ask the soft toy to do
We draw a line on the Fun page between a gift that is funny and a gift that is playful, and we hold to it. A funny gift leans on a joke, and a joke has to land or the present falls flat. A playful gift carries a lighter touch instead, and it asks nothing of the recipient beyond a smile. The toy belongs to the second kind. Its job is to give the gift a bit of warmth and personality, not to be the gift.

That only works if everything around the toy is a proper adult birthday gift in its own right. Underneath the playful part, every Fun gift is built the same way. There is a fresh birthday cake with a message on it, a generous spread of treats and a card, presented and finished to the standard we hold everything else to. The toy is the lightest thing the gift does. Take it away and an adult still has a birthday gift in front of them. Leave it in and that gift now has a personality. Working in that order is what keeps the toy in its place rather than letting it run the whole present.
Wild Thing Birthday Gift Basket (€92.59)
You can see that order at work in the Wild Thing Birthday Gift Basket, which we put together with sophisticated women in their forties, fifties and sixties in mind, though it suits a man just as well. Its own description sets itself the task of being wild, fun and imaginative without becoming kitsch or immature, which is exactly the line we walk every time. The basket does the grown-up work first. There is a fresh birthday cake, artisan Irish chocolate, almond biscotti, double chocolate marshmallows and a Butlers truffle bar, presented in a white wicker basket with a ribbon and a card.
The fun arrives through the soft toy, and the sender chooses it from a Lion, a Tiger or a Siamese Cat. None of those reads as a child's toy once it is sitting on a basket so clearly meant for an adult. It reads as a choice, a small note picked to suit someone with a bit of a wild side. A customer in Cork put the reaction simply.

“It was a beautiful basket of goodies to receive on my birthday. Made me so happy that I sent a different Baskets Galore to a friend.”
-Judith B.
Young at Heart Birthday Gift (€145.04)
We are open about the risk on the Young at Heart Birthday Gift, because the gift itself is. Its page says straight out that a buyer might question our choice of a soft toy in an adult birthday gift, and answers that we believe it is the finishing touch that sets these gifts apart from anything else. That is the whole argument in the product's own words. The toy is a finish, applied to a gift that is already substantial without it.
And substantial it is. This is one of our larger gifts, holding Montezuma chocolate buttons, biltong, a spicy chai, Lindor truffles, champagne praline truffles and a fresh birthday cake in a large wicker basket. The sender chooses a Giraffe, a Lion or a Snow Leopard to sit on top. On a gift this generous, the animal could never be mistaken for the point of the present. It is the cheerful last touch on something an adult would be glad to receive on its own. One reaction from an aunt caught that balance.

“Excellent service. Hamper was a birthday gift and my aunt was overjoyed. Packed full of high quality produce.”
-Wendy S.
Why we let the sender choose the character
It would be simpler to put the same toy in every gift, and we choose not to. The reason is the difference between a character that was chosen and one that was assumed. When the sender picks the animal, the playful part of the gift becomes a small decision about the person, the way you might pick a colour they favour or an animal that suits them. That is what separates fun that feels deliberate from fun that feels like a default setting. The toy stops being a generic cuddly thing and becomes this person's animal on this person's gift. It is the same reason no two of our Fun gifts offer the same line-up of animals to choose from.
Friends4Life Birthday Gift (€150.81)
The Friends4Life Birthday Gift is where that idea is at its clearest. Its page describes the toy as a cuddly companion sent in your place, a quiet presence for the times you cannot be there yourself. The sender takes their pick of a Collie, a French Bulldog or a Koala, and that choice is the gift speaking on their behalf. Around it sits a large and generous spread, with ginger beer, salted caramel truffles, vanilla ganache, praline truffles and a fresh birthday cake, so the companion arrives as one part of a full birthday gift rather than on its own.
This is the gift that leans most on the toy being chosen rather than dropped in, because here it is standing in for the person who sent it. A customer living abroad used it to reach a birthday she could not get home for.

“I ordered a birthday hamper for my dad as I am currently living abroad and could not be at home for his birthday. The basket was delivered on expected day and time and was full of fabulous food items. My parents loved it. Fabulous service, friendly staff who responded to my email promptly to change delivery date. Will definately be ordering from them again!!”
-Carly M.
A soft toy is the easiest item in our range to get lazy with. It is cheap to reach for, it looks good in a photograph, and it is tempting to let it do the work the rest of the gift should be doing. When that happens, the gift starts to feel as though it was meant for someone far younger, and the person opening it can tell. So the difference between fun that suits an adult and fun that quietly embarrasses one is never really the toy. It is whether the toy was carried by a real gift and chosen for a real person, or simply set on top to make the present look like fun.
That is the test we hold our fun birthday gifts to. The playful character is the finish, never the foundation. When fun is the finish, it gives a gift its warmth and tells the person that something was chosen with them in mind. When fun is the foundation, the gift is leaning on the one part of it least able to take the weight. We would rather build the gift first and add the playful element last, because that is the version a grown adult opens, smiles at, and keeps.
